People with myasthenia gravis (MG) view physical activity as beneficial, but many do not get as much physical activity as doctors recommend, according to a recent study published in the journal BMC Neurology.
Many past studies have shown that exercise is safe for people with MG and can help them feel better. This new study looked at why people with MG may not exercise as much as recommended.
The study found that the biggest reasons people did not exercise were muscle pain (35.4%) and trouble staying motivated (22%). People who struggled with motivation were younger on average and were more likely to report symptoms of depression.
Other health problems, such as heart or bone conditions, did not greatly limit activity. Only a few people believed the wrong idea that exercise could make MG worse.
“Since most individuals engage in less physical activity than recommended, healthcare providers should actively inquire about potential barriers and concerns regarding physical activity,” the researchers said. “Given its beneficial impact on physical condition and its role in reducing cardiovascular risk, individuals with MG should be encouraged and supported in becoming more physically active.”

The study was done at the University Medical Center Göttingen in Germany. A total of 84 adults with MG filled out a survey about their general mobility, weekly exercise habits and beliefs about physical activity.
About 74% said exercise had positive effects. About 77% said it improved their mood and overall well-being.
On average, participants exercised about 95 minutes per week. This is less than the World Health Organization’s recommendation of 150 minutes per week.
The study found no major differences in activity levels based on sex, age or body weight. People with more severe MG tended to be a little less active, while those who could walk farther distances usually had milder symptoms.
